Project 4G64T

Part One - September 1, 2000

Part Two - November 6, 2000

Project 4G64T - Part One - Septemer 1, 2000

For those of you who haven't heard, many of the parts from the 2nd gen turbos are a direct bolt up.  This is the case with the 2nd gen exhaust manifold.  For those of you that know your turbo workings, you know that means we can bolt up their turbo to our cars.  As of this date, there is no one to our knowledge who has done the install, and we hope to be the first!  Please note that as of right now, if you attempt this install you assume all risks.  We still are not 100% sure of the install and have already had some minor problems with parts fitting.   Your best bet is to wait until a few people have the turbos running and can give a general consensus on how hard the install was/how well it works, etc.  Of course if you are crazy like Tim, or Craig, or better yet me, by all means go right ahead.

I won't go into specifics about the parts required because this is your own personal choice.  You could run the complete stock turbo unit from a 2G or go all out with a super 16G turbo - it all depends on how much you want to spend and how much you want to risk.  Since I have not had any internal engine work, I am personally sticking with a 14B turbo right now (stock from a 1st gen GST).   They are much better than the 2nd gen T-25s.  At the bottom of this segment is my personal list of parts.

So far we have tried to address possible problems we can forsee.  I am using a GST oil pan so that I don't have to tap a return oil line in my oil pan.  Water lines will probably be "borrowed" from the throttle body.  I am also using the GST coolant overflow reservoir because it will free up some needed space where the intake/upper ic pipe goes.

If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to contact me about the Project 4G64T car.  And definitely join our discussion mailing list to follow our personal ideas about the 4G64 turbos.  Look for the next installment - hopefully with pictures and results of the turbo install towards the end of October.

My Parts List

2nd gen ported exhaust manifold (going to get it coated for hi temp and to look better)
2nd gen ported O2 housing (same coating)
2nd gen SMIC (may change to a bigger unit before the install)
Greddy I/C piping
Greddy Type S BOV
Injen intake pipe
14B turbo from first gen with Road Race Engineering install kit to make things easier
GST oil pan (again to make things easier)
GST coolant reservoir (to make room for the intake and upper I/C pipe)
Autometer Boost and A/F ratio gauges (probably EGT too)
manual boost controller or Profec B (whichever I can afford when I'm done buying everything else - lol)
and then I'll have a custom downpipe made

Project 4G64T - Part Two - November 6, 2000

Well since last update I have been pretty busy gathering more parts that I need and I still don't have everything.  How over budget am I?  VERY!!  But at least I do have a schedule now.  What follows is a list of parts I have obtained at this point, the parts that I still need, and a brief schedule of how I expect the install to go.  Check back towards the end of November for some pics of the preliminary install events.

Items Obtained:

2G Exhaust manifold (needs to be ported & HPC coated)
2G O2 Housing ported by Extreme (needs to be HPC coated)
GST coolant reservoir
GST Oil pan
GST 450cc injectors
Injen intake pipe
Starion FMIC
Greddy Profec B
Silver Greddy turbo timer
Greddy EGT
Apex-I Super AFC
Walbro fuel pump
Cool Flex radiator hoses

Greddy upper and lower I/C pipes
Greddy Type S BOV

Stuff I have purchased that is in transit to me right now:

Autometer boost gauge (damn carparts.com - been waiting since August)
ported and polished 14B turbo

Items Remaining (mostly basic stuff):

RRE install kit (gaskets, SS oil line, etc)
custom 2.5" downpipe
custom FMIC piping
RRE turbo inlet pipe
stock head to exhaust manifold gasket from Mitsubishi
studs/bolts/nuts for install
Valve cover breather filter
Injector o-rings
